SuperCharge January has been fun, healing, some challenges, but overall awesome! Both Kristy and I have benefited from this cleanse in several ways and want to share a few detox tips that will help you with your cleanse. Here are some of the positive things we have noticed since eating raw, clean foods:

  • more energy

  • clarity of mind

  • better skin

  • happier

  • full of life

  • more creative

  • I'm sure there are other benefits which we haven't noticed yet!

1. Start your day with a hot cup of water and  lemon. 

Drinking lemon water first thing in the morning causes your gallbladder to contract, which stimulates your liver; therefore getting your bowels to move. We like to add one tablespoon of raw apple cider vinegar and a few dashes of cayenne pepper which is a great little herb that helps with inflammation and gets your metabolism going. Lemon water is very alkalizing and a great way to start flushing out those toxins that have stored up in your body while you were sleeping. This daily habit will boost your body's ability to detox by getting everything moving and preparing your body for food each day.

2.  Drink Green Juices and Smoothies

Making your own juices and smoothies is a great way to flood your body with living nutrients and enzymes. When you drink juice, your body is able to carry oxygen and nutrients straight to your cells and tissues, allowing the nutrients of the foods to be quickly absorbed. You'll soon notice an increase in your energy levels! Smoothies are also a great way to get greens into your body. Green leafy vegetables have an anti-inflammatory effect, helping to reduce pain and inflammation. Greens are also packed full of oxygen which will oxygenate the blood. For a metabolism booster, try adding green tea to your smoothies in place of water.

3.  Drink plenty of water

Water hydrates the kidneys and liver which produces a cleansing affect on the body through urination. You don't want to over hydrate, though, as that can be dangerous. Some symptoms of over hydrating are: headache, fatigue, vomiting, and mental disorientation.  Remember that Juices, smoothies, and vegetables all have water content so you are getting liquid from other sources too.

4.  Omit or eat fewer animal foods

These foods are much harder for your body to digest causing more of your energy to be used for digesting foods. When cleansing, you want to eat foods that are easy to digest so the nutrients of the foods can get to your cells and tissues quicker allowing you to have more energy. Food should give you energy, not make you tired.

5.  Avoid processed foods

This is an important one! Most processed foods have all kinds of ingredients that your body was never meant to digest. You want your body to assimilate your food into energy, not store toxins in places that you don't want. Your liver is the major storehouse for toxins, but when it becomes overloaded and cannot detox as it should, you start to run into problems. Keeping your liver clean is an important step in the detoxification process. Eat liver healthy foods such as: beets, carrots, limes, lemons, grapefruit, onions, garlic, and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage.

6.  Do not smoke or drink alcohol

7.  Get regular exercise

You can lose weight on a detox diet without exercising, but when you are eating less calories and not exercising, you will eventually start to lose muscle. To avoid this from happening keep up your regular exercise program. Incorporating strength workouts along with cardio will keep your muscles in good shape. Exercise is a great way of releasing toxins by producing a natural sweat. Kristy and I have kept up our regular workouts this month while doing the cleanse, and have found that we actually have more energy and stamina than we did before. We're actually able to do more now with a healthy, clean diet.

8.  Take Epsom salt baths

Adding Epsom salts to your hot water bath is a great way of helping the detoxification process along. The salts will cause you to sweat, drawing toxins out of the body to the surface of the skin. When the water begins to cool the toxins will then be pulled from the skin. This can also be very helpful for aches and pains of the body.

9.  Get adequate rest

When you do not get enough sleep, your body will not be able to detox to its full potential. Your organs need rest for healing and recovery so that they can function properly each day by processing the foods we ingest.

10. Drink Peppermint tea

 When you first start a cleanse, some people can experience flu like symptoms because your body is releasing many of the toxins your body has stored. Drinking peppermint tea has been found to help move the detox process along. Peppermint is also great for digestive issues, bad breath, stress, and headaches just to name a few of the many benefits of this great herb.
